River Effra is one of London’s hidden rivers. Running through parts of South East London it passes Herne Hill and Brixton. The founder of River Effra, George Hutchinson grew up just off the river in Brixton and now lives next to where it flows silently under the streets in Herne Hill. And as the flood in 2013 of Herne Hill showed, when the River’s now water main burst, even though you can hide a river under the road, the water has to go somewhere.
